What I recommend though, for the long run, to prevent this, is to change the defaults in Camtasia to 'always ask' for the location of the recordings, so that every time you record videos on a new project, after the recording it would ask you where you want to save the recording file. In that case, you have a choice to locate the file manually and it will find it and carry on.

The worst that can happen is that when you open a project that uses one of those video files, it will complain that it cannot 'locate' it. While it is not recommended to work with Camtasia from external drives, as it may slow it down, I don't see any reason why you can't move the files. Moving a file to an external drive should not 'damage it', unless the external drive is corrupted in some way. I am not sure what application is giving you the error that moving the files would 'damage the video file'.
